The church and the Shrine to Our Lady of Montserrat is located at the summit of the western most ridge of the Montserrat Hills in Central Trinidad. The location obtains spectacular views of the Gulf of Paria from La Brea in the south to the Chaguaramas Peninsula in the North.
The church can be approached from either north or south via the Solomon Hochoy Highway. From north – exit on to the Preysal flyover using the old/original exit (Ramp 1). Bear left onto the Gran Couva Main Road and follow the road for about 2 miles due east avoiding any side roads/turn offs. After about 3.2km (2 miles), turn right on to Boissiere Trace and follow up hill to the T junction where it meets the Mayo Road. At the top, turn right on to Mayo Road and follow the TDC signs which lead to the Church (refer to online map on this site).
From south – exit at the Claxton Bay flyover. Bear right driving over the Solomon Hochoy Highway on to Cedar Hill Road. Pass SERVOL on the left and follow road uphill past the Dump/landfill on the left and proceed to the T junction on the top of the hill. Turn left and follow the main road bearing right and uphill passing the RC Presbytery, the Tortuga Government School and arriving at Our Lady of Montserrat RC Church on your right. No, the church was restored between 2000 and 2004 and maintains the original architecture and footprint from when it was built in 1878. The floor of Our Lady’s Chapel has the wood from the original building.
